What is the application of polyaluminum chloride in water treatment?

Polyaluminum chloride (PAC) is commonly used in water treatment primarily as a coagulant.

1. Coagulation and Flocculation: PAC helps to destabilize and aggregate suspended particles in water. When added to water, PAC reacts with the particles, causing them to clump together into larger aggregates called flocs. These flocs are then easier to remove from the water.

2. Improving Filtration: By forming flocs, PAC makes the subsequent filtration process more effective. The larger floc particles can be more easily removed from the water, which helps to produce cleaner, clearer water.

3. Reducing Turbidity: PAC is particularly effective at reducing turbidity (cloudiness) in water, which is crucial for producing high-quality treated water.

4. Water Quality Enhancement: It can also help in removing color and organic materials from water, improving the overall quality of the treated water.

PAC is favored over traditional coagulants like aluminum sulfate (alum) due to its efficiency in a wider range of pH levels, its lower dosage requirements, and its better performance in removing a broader spectrum of contaminants.
